The Master Cleanse in a Nutshell

A Master Cleanse refers to a 10-day cleansing program originally created in 1941 by a gentleman by the name of Stanley Burroughs. In a nutshell, the Master Cleanse consists of:

  • A diet that takes at least 10 days (up to 40 days, the period of time that Jesus fasted after his baptism, as Burroughs points out)
  • A program in which the only nourishment that you take is a special lemonade concoction made from lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and water, six to twelve glasses per day, each glass containing about 110 calories in sugar carbohydrates
  • Drinking an herbal laxative tea at night and a quart of salt water first thing in the morning, resulting in several liquid bowel movements every day. You will be wise to have a toilet nearby when you are on the Master Cleanse and absolutely you will need to stock up on toilet paper! You should be advised, as with any detoxification diet, that you should wean yourself off of coffee and other caffeinated beverages before you begin. Otherwise, you will experience withdrawal symptoms. These can include dizziness, vomiting, and severe headaches. You certainly won't want to deal with these at the same time as you are so dramatically altering your diet.
You come off the diet by transitioning to solid food over a few days, ideally becoming a raw food vegetarian in Stanley Burroughs' version of the diet.
